Honey Stinger's Fueling Variety Delivers!
(From the Team Inov-8 Blog)

Once again I can't say enough positive things about the high quality products that Honey Stinger is putting out for athletes and all those who are living active lifestyles. Earlier in the month I commented on how awesome their gels are. I would also like to mention how effective and diverse their other products are. While many "endurance fuel" companies only cater gels, Honey Stinger not only has the best gels, but also a variety of tasty protein bars, and fruit chews. I can tell you that while running a 100 miler or even a 50miler for that matter, I am one who likes to mix up my fuel, as I crave and handle solid foods very well. Relying on pure gels for a 100miler would definitely do me in. The organic fruit chews and protein bars are a great variety deep into a race. I recommend the Peanut butter protein bar, my favorite! It's natural, tastes super, not bland or too rich like other brands.
It's obvious that the crew at HoneyStinger have experience in running or endurance sports in general. Through these experiences of distance, endurance, bonking, and training they know what athletes need for optimal fuel and not to mention fuel that tastes good and appealing to the palate and stomach.

Keep up the great work Stinger Crew!

Laura Bowles takes a double victory for Team Advil/ChapStick - in the words of Laura Bowles

This past Saturday I was fortunate enough to race a smaller size race in Knoxville, Tennessee. Though I was solo from the team I faired well. I did miss the team immensely while racing because I was unable to have the team par take in my overall success. I essentially had to race more aggressive and with more tactics then ever.

The morning started with an early wake up at 4:30am. It is the last thing I want to do with my Saturday morning. I made the arduous drive to Knoxville, an hour and a half and suited up from my 8am, 10k time trial. Short but sweet and perfect for my limited, time trial trained muscles. I warmed up the best I could and took to the rolling roads. I enjoyed the point-to-point course while chasing down my 30second girl and finally catching my minute girl. I ended up with the winning time of the day. I was stoked!

My next race, the road race wasn't until 3pm that day. I made sure to eat my Honey Stinger, drink my Nuun and recover before lining up to the start. My goal was to initiate every break I could because there were some strong sprinters in the group and my sprinting confidence was lacking. I ended up off the front solo, 2 times each for 20 minutes in length and with solid head winds. They were both unsuccessful. By my third attempt at attaining a break I was able to get two other girls to come along. We arrived at the finish line knackered but I was still able to out sprint both of them. It was a successful weekend and my confidence is sprinting is greater!

2008 Advil-ChapStick Women’s Professional Cycling Team
Race Report
Tour of the Battenkill

Advil/ChapStick’s strong woman Anna Milkowski is victorious in Battenkill-Roubaix and followed close behind by her teammates Elisa Gagnon and Reem Jishi.
Spring has finally arrived in the Northeast and with it came the de facto season opener, the Battenkill Roubaix in Salem, NY. It’s rural 55-mile loop through the gorgeous farm country of Washington County, east of the Hudson boarding Vermont and north of Albany. In just three years the race has emerged as the biggest one day race in the country, fueled by a dedicated promoter and remarkable local support manifested in an exquisitely marshaled course, fans along climbs, and even a pancake breakfast sponsored by the high school softball team. The race features steep dirt road climbs, the flier suggesting you race with a pump and saddle bag!
Last year I made the break then finished second to Advil’s Heather Labance, who schooled me in the sprint finish. This year we were teammates! We were looking forward to a killer lead out this year, but immunology challenges of teaching got the best of dear Heather. Elisa, Reem, and I headed to Cambridge, New York were Christine at the Rice Mansion Inn graciously hosted us. We needed to represent.
We knew a selective race would work to our advantage, and at first the race seemed dangerously tame. Reem and Elisa did some animating and Elisa found her way into what looked to be a promising early break, but oddly it got chased down. I pushed the pace on the hills starting around mile 30, trying to force a selection and knowing I was better off going steady hard than inviting any surges. This whittled the group down to a surprising three. I was surprised but not complaining.
Kathleen Billington, Anna McCloon and I worked together to establish the gap. I didn’t want to leave it for the sprint against these riders, especially since I was feeling strong. Last year I regretted not trying my luck with a late-race attack on the dirt climb with eight miles to go. So this year I planned to try to split our group here. I drove it into the dirt section, which featured a definite best line and rocks and sand on either side. When I assessed the situation, Kathleen was on my wheel but Anna was gone (I later learned she flatted). Dodging the remnants of a men’s field on the climb later on, I steered into a spot that was basically a sand trap. Kathleen bobbled and I gunned it. This was the race! I knew if I made it over the top alone I could likely hold the gap to the finish. I was able to do just this, psyched to bring the win to Advil-ChapStick for the second year in a row. Elisa put in a strong ride for 11th. And if you believe in superstition, note this: I slept in the same bed at the Rice Mansion Inn as Heather did last year.
Many thanks to promoter Dieter Drake and the volunteers who made this race happen, the race is so grass roots and local they may not even know their race is one of the best in the country. Thanks also to Tim (especially for the cold Coke), and as always our sponsors. The equipment was superb under the most extreme of racing conditions, Honey stingers fueling the way.

WINKELMAN TAKES OUACHITA CHALLENGE

Nathan Winkelmann raced the Ouachita Challenge on April 6. It was supposed to be a 60 mile event, but was cut down to 53 because of flooding in the area. Nathan was tentative the first bit, having never seen the course, but soon got in a flow and went solo at mile 15, with 5 chasers. He held them off with a comfortable 5 minute cushion and ended up going the wrong way the last 3 miles. Nathan was awarded Co-1st, and would've finished 3rd even going 6 more miles.

THE YEN AND YANG OF BEING A COMPETIVE COUPLE
Titus riders Dave and Jennifer Wilson called in sick to their school teaching jobs last week to make it to McDowell Mountain Park in Scottsdale, Arizona for the second stop in the National Mountain Bike Series. Friday morning Dave lined up with some of the world’s top riders for what turned out to be a very fast 71 mile marathon event. With goals of setting out at a steady pace, staying hydrated, and not cramping, Dave finished 10th. Utilizing Salt Stick electrolytes and dispenser, Honey Stinger gels, and a hydration pack, Dave grabbed energy drink bottles from his cooler and was out of the feed zones much faster than his competitors who had helpers.
Four hours after the marathon finish, Dave saddled up on his single speed for a 20 minute Super-D. While only finishing third, a rest day on Saturday meant a full day to dial in the correct gear for the single speed cross country on Sunday. The gear check paid off as Dave ran the smallest rear cog in his stash for a 32 x 15….a very big gear on a 29er.
“Being able to stay well fueled on Friday was the reason for the 15 tooth,” said Dave. “I couldn’t make it up the climbs on the first lap because the other guys were going much slower than I needed to go in order to keep a good cadence. I rode in 3rd trying not to follow anyone up the climbs so I could keep my own rhythm. I reeled in the leader right before the finish chute for what I think may be my only come from behind win in my career.”
That was the good. The bad was that Jennifer was having a stellar XC race on Sunday and had moved into the top 15 on the last lap. With several world cup contenders and Olympic hopefuls strewn all about the course with flats, Jen was catching girls quite rapidly during the last quarter of the race. Utilizing the big wheels of her 29er, she made huge gains in the rocks and sand, but coming out of a short climb, her rear derailleur snapped. After contemplating ways to try to make it work with her full suspension, she ran 3 miles to the finish….and didn’t finish last.
Jen noted, “The drive home would really suck if Dave hadn’t had such a successful weekend. Mechanicals due to equipment failures are frustrating, but all you can do is keep going out there and putting out the best effort you can.”

Professional off road cyclist Kyia Anderson (formerly Malenkovich) of St.
Cloud, MN, finished in second place at the Keyesville Classic which was
the opening round of the USA Cycling National Calendar in Lake Isabella, CA.
20th Anniversary Keyesville Classic, Lake Isabella, CA

The Keyesville Classic provided a great course for the first round of the USA Cycling national calendar with beautiful views and powerful short climbs on an 8-mile loop. Fortunately the snow of the day before subsided and riders could focus on racing each other instead of mother-nature. From the gun Kyia (Ekho) attacked and drew out Carolyn Popovic (Team Big Bear Bikes). Carolyn countered in the first 100m and
the race was on. Up the dirt road from the start Carolyn managed to put a gap on Kyia before the first short downhill and then on the longer climb managed to get a good gap. Being the first race for Kyia she settled in to her rhythm and tried to hold on to second place and keep first in striking distance. Through the three lap race Kyia was
not able to bring back Carolyn who has been racing in So. California for a while, but got in a good solid effort to build for the season and some good points in the national calendar MTB events.

BAYLEY WINS AUSSIE LONG COURSE TRI CHAMPS

Honey Stinger backed athlete Abi Bayley took top honors recently at the Australian Long Course Triathlon Championships in Jervis Bay, New South Wales.

Bayley lead the elite women out for the first half of the swim eventually exiting the water in 4th and managing to move into 2nd place on the bike within the first hour of the ride. She held her position onto the run coming off the bike with about a minute on the next girl. After a solid start to the run Abi, who is in heavy run training for IM China, started putting time into the girls behind her and began to sense victory with only top long distance athlete Rebecca Keats still out in front. Rebecca eventually succumbed to cramp in the calf and pulled out with 12k of the run still to complete. This left Abi with the company of the lead bike and the prospect of her first major win of the year. At the finish Bayley said “I can’t believe it, I am delighted with my win today. I am in training for Ironman China in April so hopefully this is a good indicator of fitness for that.”

KNIGHT 6TH IN SEASON'S FIRST DUATHLON

In her own words, Honey Stinger athlete Christine Knight tells us of her first race of the season:

Everyone has challenges. Everyone has voices. How we face challenges and edit voices… is purely up to us. It is indeed a personal choice, mental to the core.

Going into my first competition of 2008, I tried to manage my challenges and remain open to POSITIVE voices. As you know, the past two months has brought me huge change. I still settle into Idaho while increasing training and invest in a fitness center. That said let’s add some western flavor to my race summary from the Desert Classic Du in Phoenix, Arizona February 25th.

My recipe begins with a basic winter base, seasoned by 100% pure indoor biking (as record winds, blinding snowstorms and road closures went on for over two weeks)… add a dash of all natural treadmill workouts… measure up healthy portions of new business ownership duties… fold in an unexpected overdose of stomach flu and bronchitis. Doesn’t sound like a recipe for success?! With this mutt concoction, Chef Christine began to nibble at canceling the Arizona feast altogether.

Two days before competition, I chose to take a huge bite and see how the results tasted. Even a final sour flaw (my seat post ring stripped out while tightening it race eve, leading me into a stressed frenzy for replacement ingredients) did not stop attempts to finish the dish. My great southwestern cook-off (a.k.a. race day) was not the most gourmet performance, but still brought results to toast in celebration. Clumsy training and unexpected substitutes indeed produced sweet-as-apple-pie results.

With 6th place in the female division and 2nd in age group, this baker made the USA Team roster for a cook-off in Italy. This September my menu will advance from BBQ qualifier to World Championship Cuisine! A multi sport chef was hungry enough to forge on… and is pickled, I mean, tickled with the outcome. There you have it, my usual race scoop. The next flavors on tap are an Alabama duathlon (pending funds) and Spokane’s infamous Blooms Day 12K.
Again, thank you for such fine support as I belly up to new challenges. My recipe now calls for two hearty additions: a new bike sponsor and travel funds for the ITU Duathlon World Championship venue.

After dining on this spicy update, please say hello and drop your opinion card my direction.

Yours in adventurously athletic treats,
Chef C

AKA, Christine Knight-Hauger

CAITLIN TRAHAN RIDES REALLY FAST

Going on her seventh week of base training, Caitlin Trahan’s season is looking like a fast one. “I haven’t skipped a beat this year. I’ve been really inspired by my sponsors and the local, as well as national, race scene to really boost my game”. After being picked up by team Vanderkitten, as well as other personal sponsors (her favorite = Honey Stinger, obv.), she enlisted fellow Stinger rider and certified coach, Aaron Oakes, to put together a training plan that will get her on the podium. “I actually LOVE kicking a** so this is perfect”.

Besides taking dignity from boys when showing off her technical skills, Caitlin gives tons back to the cycling community. In 2007 she founded the Atlantic Collegiate Cycling Conference cyclocross series and placed 2nd in the series. She is looking forward to a winning season and finally graduating from college. Stinger riders make us proud.

Rebecca Dussault finishes 6th in Winter Triathlon World Championships!

In a very impressive effort, Stinger athlete Rebecca Dussault ran, biked and skied with the best in the world. In the end coming away with the best american female finish ever!
Rebecca came into the race with no
expectations. She has not been training for this event and was asked just last week if she wanted a spot on
the three person team. Well, for a first timer at a World Championships in
this event it doesn’t get much better. She had a very strong run finishing the 7k course in the top ten and made the transition to the bike very quickly. After 4 laps on the 14.6k course she was in 9th place. She worked with a group of gals into the transition for
10k the cross country ski. By this time she was ready for her specialty. She worked hard on the ski despite
some leg cramps and picked off as many gals as she could. In the end finishing in a very impressive 6th place out of 38
women.

Honey Stinger/Titus Riders Get Early Start for 2008

The racing season started early for Titus riders Jennifer and David Wilson with a single speed epic in Tucson on January 19th. Single speed guru Dejay Birch hosted his third annual Single Swizzle which consisted of an epic 50 mile jaunt through the Catalina Mountains. Both riders finished 2nd in their fields with Jennifer getting a bit lost and riding with a non-functioning front brake. David used his Garmin Edge with a downloaded course file for navigation, but was dealt some crank arm issues early in the race. Great weather and incredible trails made up for the disappointing 2nd places with the final descent coming down Milagrosa Ridge providing an incredible arm pump after frying the legs for more than four hours prior.

On February 2nd, Jennifer and David hosted their own event….the first and only epic XC race in El Paso. Naming the race the Puzzler due to having to pick up pieces of a bumper sticker that would indicate that riders completed all portions of the course, the race was organized well enough with volunteers and TX State Park employees that David and Jennifer were able to race their single speeds on the challenging 45 mile course. Running WTB Weir Wolf LT 29er tires, David finished 2nd overall with Jennifer, the current single speed national champion, in 3rd only 3 minutes behind. Seventeen out of 29 starters finished the event. All participants were absolutely blown away with the difficulty of the course. The course record was set at 4:25 on a geared bike. The last finishers finished in 8:30.

The week before February 16th was hectic with David being hired as a full-time science teacher at a local high school. Despite driving all over town to complete paperwork, multiple meetings with department heads, and frantically trying to organize a new classroom, David was able to assemble brand new Titus Racer-X 29ers and get everything packed up for the Mas o Menos 100 km in Terlingua that Saturday.

A 5 hour drive to the Big Bend in the Rio Grande brought the riders to a gathering of the mountain bike community mostly consisting of central Texans. But the open men’s field was stacked with top endurance racers from all over the country including Ernesto Marenchen, Yuri Hauswald, and Nat Ross. Southwest hot shots Mike McCalla and Jason Sager along with some fast Mexican riders helped round out a stacked field.

Jennifer’s first attempt at the Mas o Menos resulted in a DNF due to multiple flats. This year she was determined to finish strong hoping to beat multi-time winner Christina Smith. With all open racers starting together, Dave pushed out with the top ten early in the race and Jen immediately put the pressure on Smith who has posted margins of well over 20 minutes on her nearest competitors for the past few seasons of the Texas marathon races. While Dave did his best to stay smooth with the fast pace near the front, Jen backed off the pace to conserve for the big climb near the end of the lap. Dave imploded early in the second lap while Jen chased her leader in the single track. Dave backed off before the climb on the second lap to see the women’s leader coming up the trail. While refueling he watched the time to try to get a split for Jen who eventually passed Dave on the climb.

Jen ended up finishing 3 minutes off of Smith for 2nd place and Dave finished 30th out of 35 open men finishers.

“This is the second time I’ve been able to beat Dave in an actual race,” exclaimed Jennifer, a special education middle school teacher. “The first time was when he returned from a 3 month deployment in Kuwait and he was about 20 pounds overweight. This time he has no excuse other than going against his initial race strategy of starting slow. We both went out quite hard and we both paid the price.”

“I’m disappointed in my performance at the Mas o Menos, but I’m pleased with our results so far this season,” stated David. “Our first two events were low pressure and we were able to work out some kinks with our equipment. Terlingua provided us with some great racing on brand new bikes and everything worked well except the fast pace of the start. I’m looking forward to the spring races and this summer will be extra fun as both of us will be on paid vacations.”

Jennifer and David ride Titus 29ers (geared Racer-X’s and custom titanium hardtail single speeds). For 2008 other sponsors include WTB, Honey Stinger, Stan’s No-Tubes, Salt Stick, Magura, Tifosi, and Vinci Bike.

Keep track of this competitive couple’s racing at www.fastmtnbiker33w.wordpress.com.

Oakes Takes Second Straight Jersey 'Cross Series
After an arduous cyclocross season comprised of 18 races throughout New Jersey and the greater Mid Atlantic region, long time stinger rider Aaron Oakes managed to win the New Jersey state cyclocross cup series for the second year in a row in the elite category. This year he was also able to win the title of New Jersey state champion in the elite category. He quickly became a big fan of the new honey stinger protein bars for recovery saying "after every race I looked forward to treating myself to a honey stinger protein bar -especially the new dark chocolate cherry almond- it was more like a dessert than recovery, but with all the right nutrition."

Winkelman Takes Down Legend Lance
Nathan Winkelman had a pretty good weekend down in Texas. Lance wasn't a rumor, and showed up. He was lined up right next to Winkelmen. "I invisioned the next 54 miles on a rocky MTB course to be a tough ride. I took off as fast as a XC race(it was a marathon) and got a gap on the first climb. Then as we hit the more technical stuff, I knew the gap would open more. I kept thinking of what (a friend) told me, to "smoke him" so I kept the gas on(it was more like cruise control). After warming up to 70 degrees(gotta love Texas weather), and eating a bunch of honeystinger, I was on the final stretch, with a time of 4:06. Lance just happend to have 11 miles to go, with a 12 minute deficit, and decided that he wouldn't catch me....so he DNF'd.
So, I got 1st overall. https://www.usacycling.org/results/index.php?year=2008&id=129&info_id=12057

Honeystinger Team Member Wins Medals
January 12-13 was a big weekend for Honeystinger Snowboard Team member Madeline Schaffrick, as she landed on competition podiums a total of four times.
Her gutsy performances left Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club snowboard program director Jon Casson searching for the right words Tuesday. “Insane-o,” was the one-word conclusion that Casson finally made of Maddy’s accomplishment.
Schaffrick, 13, decided to step up from her age class to the top “open” class for the first time at USASA Copper Series slopestyle and halfpipe events, Saturday and Sunday at Copper Mountain.
Schaffrick won both events outright. She then qualified for the special Burton AM Series event, which followed the USASA competition and included its top riders.
In the Burton AM slopestyle competition, Schaffrick took second. Then Schaffrick nailed the frontside 720 of her second halfpipe run to win the competition, securing a “wildcard” berth to the U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships, March 17 to 23 in Stratton, Vt. Casson said Schaffrick is the youngest member of the Winter Sports Club to ever qualify for the event.
“I just hoped I’d survive against them,” Schaffrick said of the competition she beat, which included a U.S. Snowboarding team member and junior world championship medalist. “In my first run, I played it safe and in the second, I went all out, and I guess I did it well.”

Tim O'Donnell In His Own Words
2007 was definitely an exciting year for me! After I went to ITU Elite World Championships in Hamburg this September, I came back to the US to try my first non-drafting triathlon of the season. I was the first American and 4th overall at the LA Triathlon. I then went on to represent the United States at the World Military Games in Mumbai, India. I placed 10th at Worlds, a magnificent event with over 100 participating countries! I ended the season in December at the Eilat World Cup where I had my best World Cup of the season with an 11th place.

2008 promises to be a great season as well. I qualified for the USA Triathlon Elite National Team and will begin the season this March at the Mooloolaba World Cup in Australia. Of course the focus of 2008 will be the Olympics. I will be heading to Tuscaloosa, AL April 19th for the US Olympic Trials. I am getting excited for the race and I am grateful to have the support of everyone at Honey Stinger when I step up to the start line this April!

SAUL RAISIN JOINS TEAM STINGER
Professional road cyclist Saul Raisin has joined team Honey Stinger and will be the next great athlete to enjoy the benefits provided by Honey Stinger bars and gels. Raisin, on his comeback path from a possibly life and career-ending brain injury will be racing for the Credit Agricole team in Europe next year.
Raisin had to say about his training regimen: "Not only do I have to train like a pro but I have to eat, sleep, and drink cycling.. Eating healthy and right is very important to being a good cyclist that is why I am so excited to work with honey stinger. Their all natural energy bars are just what I need to fuel me on my long training rides where every calorie counts, and every ounce of energy is needed. Also as important after those long intense training rides for recovery, I have honey stinger protein bars. Because of their balance of twenty grams of protein, antioxidants, and loads of vitamins and minerals they are perfect for replenishing my empty tank and recovering even faster each day...I am so excited for the opportunity to work with Honey Stinger!"
Keep an eye on the news for Raisin next year as he works his way back to the elite levels of the cycling world.

CAITLIN TRAHAN DOMINATES ATLANTIC COLLEGIATE CYCLING CONFERENCE
Stinger rider Caitlin has won 3 cross country races 2 short track races, 1 super D, 1 down hill and 1 dual slalom race and a partridge in a pear tree to put her in the lead of the conference. In her other two races that she didn't win, Caitlin placed 2nd.
North Carolina State University held their home race this weekend involving a fast course. "I'm not a sprinter and the prologues generally hurt me. I drafted until we were close to the woods and I sprinted first onto the trail. I'm a much better technical rider than any of the girls in the conference but I can lose time easily on the hills and straights so I have to get in the woods first"
Caitlin races for the North Carolina State University in the collegiate series and team Vanderkitten in non collegiate races.
Caitlin on XC races "the competition is pretty tough but I push hard because I know that the boys only went off two minutes before me and I want to catch them even more than I want to win" Caitlin on dating "it's hard even though I'm surrounded by them 24 sev. My time is filled up with bikes, school and racing so I don't even have the opportunity". This weekend Caitlin will attend Crosstober fest; a cyclocross event filled with bikes and beer.

Leah Larson of Honey Stinger sponsored triathlon team Premier Multisport placed 2nd in her age group and moreover 2nd OVERALL at the world championships in Germany. TINKER JUAREZ WINS NATIONAL MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP, TAKES THIRD AT THE BRECKENRIDGE 100
Legendary mountain biker Tinker Juarez won the Firecracker 50 in Breckenridge, Colorado on the Fourth of July to win his eighth red, white, and blue national championship jersey. Of his win Tinker had to say, “This was my 8th National Jersey and as you get to this point of your life/career, it means a lot. So much has happened this last year. With Joshua, new responsibilities, my new wife, and everything else, it was nice to bring home the jersey. It was for the family.”
As if a 50 mile race wasn’t enough, Tinker was back in Breckenridge two weeks later to compete in the Breckenridge 100. After taking a wrong turn, losing a lot of time and gaining a lot of frustration, Tinker put his game face back on and finished in a solid third place to round out the podium for the day. In Tinker’s words, “The race was great - the place was super beautiful - and it was good to see everyone out there. I'll be back next year for sure!”

Gear Of The Day: Honey Stinger Protein Bars
by: Ron Koch
I've always been a big fan of Honey Stinger's bars and gels, but its two new Protein bars ($2.25) flavors really got my tastes buds attention. In addition to the delicious Peanut Butta Pro flavor Honeystinger now offers Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond and Dark Chocolate Coconut Almond. They're formulated for post workout recovery and as a healthy meal replacement. Each 390-calorie bar is made with 100% USDA certified organic honey and contains 20 grams of protein, 23 essential vitamins and minerals, calcium and anti-oxidants. There are no trans fats or partially hydrogenated oils and the bar is made with gluten free ingredients for the wheat intolerant out there. All three flavors are awesome without any kind of funny aftertaste, but the Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond is almost like eating a candy bar.

Team Premier Multisport has Strong Showing at the USAT Collegiate National Championship, Tuscaloosa, AL

By far the deepest and most talented field ever assembled for this national championship. There was surprising speed, especially in the men’s field. The women’s field was 329 competitors and the men’s was 498.
Leah has been working hard on her swim during the winter and it paid off as she exited the water with the lead pack. She fell back a little during the bike, but then blew away the field with the 3rd fastest run split finishing 4th overall. Dave had high aspirations going in and came out of the water with the lead pack. A slower than usual bike dropped him down a few spots, but he did manage a PR on the run. He ended up 37th overall.

7/26/05 Honey Stinger Swarms Tour de ‘Toona
MS2R-Honey Stinger, Victory Brewing, Ford-Basis Set to Fly

A composite women’s team comprised of American and French riders, racing under the MS2R-Honey Stinger name and wearing Honey Stinger jerseys, will race in America's premier stage race, the 2005 International Tour de Toona. Riders on the Victory Brewing and Ford-Basis teams will also use Honey Stinger energy bars and gels. The event will run from July 25-31 in Altoona and throughout central Pennsylvania.

The composite team will include Magali Le Floch (2005 French National Road Champion), Magalie Laivier, Marina Jaunatre, Sophie Creux and Mary Schuette. Juanatre won the opening stage of the Tour of Bretagne and general classification in addition to performing well at the recent Tour de l'Aude. Team organizers expect to field teams with eight members - the maximum allowed under United States Cycling Federation rules at Altoona.

"Honey Stinger will be well represented at the Tour de ‘Toona this year," said marketing director Len Zanni. "Some of the best women cyclists in the world are here to race against each other and we’re excited to help fuel their endeavors with our bar and gel products. We’re excited to support the composite team as well as our long-standing fans on the Victory Brewing and Ford-Basis teams. Best of luck to all the riders."

The International-Tour de 'Toona bicycle race was created nearly 20 years ago as a one-day race to energize and rally the Altoona community behind an athletic event the city could call its own. Initially called the Tour de 'Toona, its original goal was to draw people into downtown Altoona in the dog days of August.

From those humble beginnings, the race - which highlights women's events - has grown to become the largest pro-am cycling event in North America, and #1 rated women's race in the US. The appeal is international. It has become extremely well known and highly respected among participants and enthusiasts, who commonly are more affluent and more highly educated than population averages. Today, people come from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa to ride in or to view The International-Tour de 'Toona. The International Tour de Toona is the only stage race for men and women to earn the USCF's highest ranking - 2.1 in America in 2005. Visit http://www.tourdetoona.com, for more information.

7/25/05 Team Honey Stinger Braves Storm to Take 4th at Adventure Race

From Stinger warehouse manager, athlete and Team Honey Stinger captain, Scott Murrell, "Team Honey Stinger Placed 4th this weekend after a grueling 24 hour adventure race that ended up being cancelled with about 4.5 to 5 hrs left in the race. Honey Stinger was closing in on second and third place when a brutal lightning storm threatened all the teams at around 11000 feet. Huddled together under space blankets for about an hour the message was received that the race was over and we were placed where we were at that time. Disappointed but relieved all at the same time. Nike/ Balance Bar took first. Followed by Solomon/ Smartwool and Bagel Works. With our strongest section, the infamous trekking up and over 12500 feet from Breckinridge to Copper, and the skate/kick bike left to go, it looked promising for us to take over second and third only 10-15 minutes back. Oh well, next time. We dropped our series lead and now trail by only three points going into the final race in September. Stinger was a big hit and some teams that were using the product during the race could not believe how well it worked to keep them moving on what some called the hardest mtn bike ever." Keep it up Scott!

07/21/05 Cristina Begy Takes 2nd at Innaugural Breckenridge 100

07/19/05 Adventure Racer Rebecca Rusch of Team Montrail Partners with Danielle Ballengee and Takes Second at Spanish Women's International Adventure Race

This competition put on by Emma Roca (Team Buff of Spain) was a 2-day staged event for 2-person teams of women. Rebecca and Danelle Ballangee raced together as TEAM RUBICON (remember Eco-Challenges in Morocco and Patagonia where Reba captained 3 women, 1 man teams?). The race took place in the mountainous El Bergueda region northwest of Barcelona toward the Pyrenees and the French border...where the weather was unusually warm (over 100) on the weekend causing challenges in fighting dehydration and heat cramps. Patrick was the support crew for the team, and according to Rebecca really took great care of them. (He also got to go paragliding 3 times at the race HQ area as it was a paragliding school and launch area, so he was in 7th heaven.)

Here's part of Rebecca's quick post-race email: "We got 2nd overall and had a blast. We're faster than all the other teams, but found out after the race that winning Team Abarth from Spain had the Spanish national orienteering champion on their team...definitely gave them an advantage. Also trying to read the Spanish/Catalunya words on the maps and trail signs definitely slowed us down. So in the end, it was our route finding and navigation that cost us 1st place, but we had a blast. Nelly and I raced really well together, and I learned a ton. We just needed two more orienteering points and we´d have won the race. But Team Abarth did great...they were really happy and so were we. So much fun to do a women's race and also a really hard womens race. We were pushing hard the whole time. The climbing was a blast. Navigation a challenge. Over all, one of the best races I´ve done."

06/27/06 Team Honey Stinger Blazes to Another Victory at TEVA X-1 Race in Gunnison, Colorado

Team Honey stinger won the Gunnison Teva X-1 games this weekend in a surprising 5 hrs and 41 min. winning their second race in a row. Second place was 1 hr and 10 min behind. The race consisted of a 9 mile paddle, 33 mile bike and a 9 mile run with a river swim across the Gunnison River to finish the day. Team members were Keri Nelson, Paul Maniaci, John Starr, and Scott Murrell (our warehouse manager extraordinaire by the way!), Scott reports, "We all raced only with Honey Stinger products and an Oreo cookie or two. It was a great race for us and happily we ended with a great result. Strawberry and Ginsting are the gels of choice for our crew."

Go TEAM HONEY STINGER!

06/27/05 Lauren Franges (Victory Brewing Team) Claims Espoir National Championship

At 7600 feet altitude the 2005 Women's Road Race National Championships got underway. The Profesional women had 78 miles of racing ahead of them which included 2 substantial climbs going out and 2 coming back into town. Within the Pro Women's road race, the top Espoir(U23) will be crowned National Champion.

From the start of the race Team T-Mobile took control of the race and set a hard tempo over the climbs into the wind. 10 miles into the race a break of
6 riders finally broke loose. With the peleton being content to let it slip away, riders from T-Mobile, Lipton, Quark and Webcor charged forward for the majority of the race gaining up to 1 minute 30 seconds.

With 15 miles remaining in the race and 2 major climbs back into the town of Park City, the breakaway was caught. A surge of 8 riders quickly followed that slipped away including Kristen Armstrong(T-Mobile), Kate Sherwin(victory Brewing), Christine Thornburn(Webcor), Grace Fleury(Quark), Katherin Curi(Webcor), Kim Baldwin(T-Mobile) and Lynn Gaggioli(Monex). As the breakaway paused to look at one another, Katherin Curi launched an attack which would prove to be the winning move.

With still 8 miles of racing to go Katherin Curi drove it to the line. As the miles slipped by, the peloton was going to be sprinting for 2nd place.
With 700 meters to go Kate Sherwin(Victory Brewing) gave it one last go to slip away before the bunch finish. As the sprint began she was reabsorbed into the group and the sprint was won by Lynn Gaggioli(Monex)for 2nd place.

Lauren Franges sprinted into an 8th place amongst the pro women and claimed the #1 spot as Espoir National Champion. Way to go Lauren! We hope you'll sign posters again for your fans at our Interbike booth!

06/13/05 Team Honey Stinger Off to a Great Start, Takes adventure Xstream Race.

Team Honey Stinger, captained by our warehouse manager Scott Murrell, took 10th at Teva Mountain Games in Vail last weekend - the first ever world class level event for the team - and with female Keri Nelson ill with walking pneumonia. However, a last minute substitution to loyal honey stinger fan Carol Quinn, elite nordic skier Rebecca Dusault's mother, allowed the team to race strong this past weekend and take first at the adventure Xstream race in Durango this past weekend in the first national qualifier of the season. Looks like Team Honey Stinger is headed to nationals as a top ranked team. Way to go gang!

06/06/05 Testimonial from a Stinger Fan

We love to hear feedback from our customers and thought you might be interested to read the following testimonial sent by DC from Colorado.

"Last weekend, I ran the Rocky Mountain Double Marathon up in Wyoming for the seventh time. Although I had used Honey Stinger packets a few times on training runs, I had never used them in a race before.

During the race, I used your product as my exclusive source of fuel (other than a small amount of a powdered drink mix). I spaced out 12 packets over the course of 8 hours and 47 minutes. The result? My first outright win in a race of any distance after 11 years of racing. I felt great all day. While many things factor into a good run, your product certainly helped immensely. My energy level was very consistent and I never grew weary of sucking down another packet of honey. I have eaten 12+ packets of other types of gel in other races and it was all I could do to keep it down.

Thanks again. You have a new fan. Your product kicks ass."

06/2/05 CU Cycling Team Wins Team Classification at Collegiate Road Nationals

Congratulations to the entire University of Colorado cycling team after a successful national championships. Here's an update from sponsorship coordinator Elliot Dickerson, "As many of you already know, CU Cycling had an incredible showing at the 2005 National Collegiate Cycling Association Road Nationals by winning the overall team classification and bringing home another set of National Championship
jerseys. Winning the overall team classification was CU Cycling’s most
important goal from the beginning of the year, and we’d like to thank you for the role that you’ve played in bringing the stars and bars back to Boulder.
We simply couldn’t have done this without the support of our sponsors.

All season long CU Cycling has excelled on both the collegiate and amateur racing scene, even sending riders to other states in Sea Otter (Monterey, CA), Valley of the Sun (Phoenix, AZ), Tour of Utah (Provo, UT), and the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic (Portland, OR). CU Cycling won the Rocky Mountain Conference this season in a convincing fashion, racking up 11,104 points over our closest rivals, Fort Lewis College at 6,829, and CSU at 4,524." Way to go gang!

Another update from one of our sponsored runners. "Hope you had a good weekend. I ran two races and did well in them. I ran a 5K "powerun" on Saturday and finished 4th in about 15:30 or so (and two lifts of my body weight-145 lbs, pretty funny, I only got it up twice but much better than my practices leading up to the race). Sunday, I ran the "Delaware Marathon" and won the race in a Delaware State and Course Record of 2:27:49."

Records are nice Michael! Keep racking them up!

5/17/05
Another Satisfied Racer...

This just in from one of our friends from the Dean Bicycles cycling team. "Tim Barnes, Team DEAN again. Thanks for the advice! I just finished a 60 mile road race and only needed Ginsting. It was amazing! Since I started taking only water during my race I've had NO spikes in energy, NO acid-reflux, NO nasty after-taste and chemical residue taste in my mouth. Your stuff is working great! I could take doses without getting that gag feeling from it being too thick, like the other gels. It disolved quickly and clean. The funny thing was that it even made my water taste better.

Thanks for all your support!!" Tim

5/1/05 Michael Wardian Continues his Marathon Success!

I really appreciate the support and just wanted to keep you posted.

Best Regards,

The duo finished 11th and 5th respectively in the GC, marking Nicole's best GC finish since the Wheels 'N Tots Kids Fun Ride. Halfway across the world, back in the US, Alisha won a race but is downplaying the international significance of the victory. 2/15/05 Honey Stinger Introduces Strawberry Energy Gel Packets
Kola Nut Extract Adds Extra Kick

EN-R-G Foods, Inc. recently introduced Honey Stinger Strawberry energy gel packets. Strawberry is the sixth gel packet flavor introduced by the Colorado energy gel and bar manufacturer and the second to include caffeine delivered by kola nut extract. Other ingredients include; B vitamins, sodium, potassium, 32mg caffeine from kola nut extract and natural flavors.

Strawberry Honey Stinger packets are available in 1.3-ounce single serving packets, ideal for on-the-go energy during activities such as running or cycling. Honey Stinger is an extremely versatile gel as it may also be mixed with water for use as an energy drink, added to cereals and oatmeal, spread atop toast or bagels or used in fruit smoothies.

“Our honey-based energy gel packets are becoming extremely popular among athletes from a variety of sports, but we constantly receive requests for more caffeinated flavors,” said Len Zanni, EN-R-G Food’s director of marketing. “Caffeine is a substance that has been proven to aid athletic performance plus a lot of athletes are looking for caffeine sources other than coffee to ingest before competition. Strawberry will allow us to build upon the success of our Ginsting flavor and provide another option for those looking for an extra boost."

2/1/05 Kona 'Cross Team Throws Down at Cyclocross World Championships

The snowy course at St. Wendel Germany surely mixed up the racing but that did not keep the top favorites from standing atop the podium at days end with Sven Nys and Hanka Kupfernagle claiming the World Championship Victories. The course turned slippery and sketchy as morning rain fell on the snow that had blanketed the course. The conditions made for a race in which the start was the key to a good placing.

Ann Knapp for the 2nd year in a row was the top placing North American, finishing 7th in the Elite Women's race. Unfortunately for Ann this was the year the World Championships start order was based on UCI individual points instead of the team finish/points. As a result a 3rd row start position did not lend itself well to a slippery, snowy course which made it very hard to pass and take risks. Ann was happy with her ride and wishes she could have had a better start position. But as a full time physical therapist chasing UCI points for a chance at a better world championship start position simply isn't in the cards. Still Ann was able to put in a great ride, finish in the top 10.

On the men's side of things it was no surprise the Sven Nys took top honors. Kona team riders Ryan Trebon, Barry Wicks and Erik Tonkin all had good rides. Ryan had been fighting illness all week and was yo-yoing in the top 10-15 places when he finally began to fade on the last lap to finish a very respectable 15th place. Barry Wicks had a solid ride and finished 30th. Erik Tonkin was the last rider in the field to finish on the same lap as the leaders. This was a great ride for him at what is his first world championship race.

1/24/05 Subaru Factory Team Continues Winning Ways

Subaru Factory Team veteran Nathan Schultz skied to victory this weekend for the second straight year at the Pepsi Challenge in Biwabik, MN. This opening event in the 2005 American Ski Marathon (ASM) series featured fresh snow and cold temperatures and slow snow. In a similar fashion to the previous year's race, Schultz was able to dig in on the last major climb and pull away from the competition, winning the event by over a minute. Team member Rob Whitney battled through the soft snow to finish 4th in his first marathon since coming back from retirement. Subaru Factory Team member and mother Tara Sheahan made the trip from Boulder, CO to compete for the women's title, taking 5th place while her teammate Caitlin Compton finished in 8th.

10km proved to be a good distance for Subaru Factory Team member Ivan Babikov. The 2005 SuperTour leader extended his points lead this weekend in Mt. Itasca, MN by winning both the 10k free and 10k classic SuperTour races. Subaru Factory Teammate Lars Flora showed why he made the 2005 World Championship Team being the only skier able to threaten Babikov's victories.

Saturday's freestyle race was nearly a Subaru Factory Team sweep with Chad Giese narrowly missing out on 3rd place. Giese who finished 10th in Sunday's classic event moved into 2nd place in the 2005 SuperTour standings while Flora moved into 4th. Giese has now qualified to race the Spring World Cups.

1/21/05 Stinger Athlete Bests Treadmill Marathon World Record

People driving through the Clarendon section of Arlington yesterday 12/13/04 must have wondered why a man dressed in black was running on a treadmill in a covered foyer in front of a busy corner store across from the Metro station.
That man was Michael Wardian, on a mission to break the world record for a marathon run on a treadmill. His other mission was to get people to the grand opening of the Pacers store, one of his many sponsors.
Ahead of pace early on, Wardian crushed the previous record set by elite marathoner John Cox at the runner's expo before the Boston Marathon last April. Cox, a 2:14 marathoner on the roads, had run 26.2 miles on the treadmill in 2:31:04.
Wardian punched out a brilliant 2:23:58, which will land him in "The Book of Alternative Records."
The only speed bump Wardian hit was when the treadmill reached 60 minutes and suddenly stopped. But he quickly got the machine moving again.

1/21/05 Kona Cross Team Continues to Crank - in Europe

Ryan Trebon put in another extremely impressive ride posting his best finish of his foray in Europe finishing 18th at the Cyclo-Cross World Cup #9 - CDM in Nommay, France, January 16, 2005. Ryan started in the third row and was able to punch it at the start and get into the top 15 riders. He stayed in the group till the last lap when he flatted and fell back to 18th place.

Ann Knapp had a disappointing finish at 13th place. Knapp was racing strong in the top five when two flats took her out of the chase for the podium. Knapp felt good and that she would have been in contention for a podium finish but at this level of racing two flats are just too hard to come back from.

1/10/05 Subaru Factory Team starts 2005 with another
Championship title.

Ivan Babikov, Subaru Factory Team www.enjoywinter.com, won the 30km Freestyle event by over a minute in the first day of competition at the 2004 US National Cross-Country Skiing Championships. Abby Larson, Subaru Factory Team, took an outstanding 2nd place in the women's 15 Km Freestyle event. Larson's time of 45:00 was a mere 5 seconds behind the US Ski Team's Rebecca Dussault. Larson's teammate, Tara Sheahan placed 11th.

This was the 1st of 5 races at this years National Championship's which are being held on the Soldier Hollow, Utah, 2002 Olympic courses.

9/9 Cristina Begy Finishes 5th at 24 Hour World Championships In Spite of Bad Crash

Today's heart and soul award goes out to Stinger athlete Cristina Begy for her finish at the 24 Hour Worlds in France. Read about her epic as told by manager Don Nelson, "Cristina raced with all her heart and represented all of you, her sponsors, exceptionally well with no reservations. She raced neck and neck with Leslie for the lead separated by 2 minutes, until midnight when she crashed. Cristina hit a technical “rooty” section at high speed not realizing how wet it had become during the night. During her crash she broke her helmet, front fork, pedal and shoe. Basically, it knocked the !#$# out of her! She sustained a contusion on her right butt covering the entire cheek, down the hamstring and quad area. She was unable to generate any power from her right leg and couldn’t sit on her saddle without pain. She raced 12 more hours and finished the race!" Ouch!! Way to hang in there Cristina!

11/15/03 Subaru Factory Team to Fly on Honey Stinger
Honey Stinger Named Official Bar and Gel of Elite Nordic Team

8 December 2003, Steamboat Springs, CO – En-R-G Foods, Inc., makers of Honey Stinger energy bars and gels, recently announced a two-year sponsorship agreement with the Subaru Factory Team. The company will continue its support of the elite Nordic ski racing team through 2005 as official bar and gel supplier and Bronze Level Sponsor. According to Len Zanni, Director of Sales and Marketing for EN-R-G Foods, "We’re fired up to help the Subaru Factory Team fly again this winter. The team members we’ve worked with are great ambassadors as well as racers, and we wish them all the best this season."

The world’s oldest, largest and most recognized cross-country skiing trade team, the Subaru Factory Team is comprised of 13 champion athletes, including three Olympians and two national champions. Subaru Factory Team athletes have won ASMS champion’s cup titles for the past eight years and have won or been on the podium at the American Birkebeiner for the past seven. Team owner Andrew Gerlach says, "I have nothing but good things to say about Honey Stinger," and reports that, "after years of choking down every bar and gel available, we discovered Honey Stinger – energy food that is easily digested and tasty enough to flavor our oatmeal and tea each morning, yet potent enough to sustain us during races."

Available in five flavors of gels and four varieties of bars, Honey Stinger combines pure honey with B vitamins and important electrolytes to provide a great tasting energy source. The natural sugars found in honey are lower on the glycemic index than those found in other gels. Its unique composition allows Honey Stinger to sustain energy levels longer and prevent the "spike and crash" effect common to other energy foods.

John Joyoprayitno Wins Honey Stinger Interbike Contest
Austin Cyclist Set for Steamboat’s Snowflakes and Singletrack

31 October 2003, Steamboat Springs, CO – Each morning, John Joyoprayitno eats a Honey Stinger bar for breakfast. "I had no idea that my favorite breakfast food would win me a trip to Steamboat Springs," jokes the 24-year old co-owner of 360 Cycleworks in Austin, TX. Joyoprayitno, along with two partners, opened 360 Cycleworks in June. A "full-service" bike shop, 360 Cycleworks caters to fat tire aficionados, roadies, tandem twosomes, BMXers, and kids. The shop has proudly sold Honey Stinger for as long as it’s been in business.

Joyoprayitno has the option to redeem the Steamboat Springs vacation in winter for a ski getaway, in summer for steep singletrack or in spring for a sampling of both sports. At press time, the lucky winner was undecided as to when he would journey to Steamboat, but regardless of his decision, he can expect lift tickets (for skiing or biking), a tour of Honey Stinger’s facilities and luxurious accommodations, courtesy of Steamboat’s Mountain Resorts.

Bill Gamber, vice president of EN-R-G Foods, Inc., makers of Honey Stinger, decided to sponsor a contest as a way to thank the industry for the overwhelming support Hone
